In 1987, Gold Britannia Coins were minted for the first time. Gold was the only metal used by the Royal Mint for a decade in bullion items before the Silver Britannia was reached for the very first time in 1997. Using silver, gold, and platinum, they now manufacture Britannia. In its three-decade lifetime, the Britannia has featured 14 different reverse styles. "Britannia" is included in each template, which is actually the British equivalent of our "Lady Liberty." In each illustration, she still wears a helmet, flowing garments, and a trident. All around the world, both gold, and silver Britannia coins are highly popular; any new release is anxiously awaited by both collectors and investors.
One troy ounce of 9999 gold is used to mint the Gold Britannia coins. Many other government-backed coins come in various weights, but one of the few coins that only come in a one troy ounce weight is the Britannia. The British government backs these coins with a face value of £100.
The Gold Britannia has been minted since 1987, however, until 2013 the coins were produced with .917 gold purity. Since then, however, the British Royal Mint has made the change to .9999 pure gold for the coins, the 2021 Britannia included!
The Jody Clark effigy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II graces the obverse of the 2021 Gold Britannia. Encircling the effigy is the text “100 POUNDS” “ELIZABETH II” and “D G REG F D” the last of which represents the Latin phrase “Dei Gratia Regina” which means “By the Grace of God, Queen.”
The reverse of the 2021 Gold Britannia features the likeness of the Goddess Britannia. She is depicted as holding strong against a forceful gale, with the sun emanating from behind her. She has served as a depiction of Britain’s strength in the face of adversity dating back to Roman times. Encircling the Goddess is the year of issue, weight, and metal type.
